Toni Cavagnaro, 40 » April 14. Police believe Cavagnaro’s boyfriend shot her at their Oakley home, then turned the gun on himself. Cavagnaro’s sister said that the couple had been together for about 10 years and at one point were engaged, but the relationship broke down a month before the shooting.
Maxine Langston, 78 » April 15. Langston died of head injuries she suffered in 2012 at her Millcreek home. She had been struck several times with a hard object.
Rolando Cardona-Gueton, 62 » April 20. Cardona-Gueton was found as if he had hanged himself in his Gunnison prison cell. Further investigation led investigators to believe that his cellmate had killed him.
Elvis Olsen, 22 » April 21. Olsen was found shot to death near Fort Duchesne on the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation, and his Mazda was gone. When investigators caught up to a fugitive who had skipped bail, they said they found him driving Olsen’s Mazda. Both men were believed to be in the Uintah County Jail at the same time, but they did not share a cell.
Ricardo Portillo, 46 » April 26. A teenage soccer player allegedly punched Portillo, a referee, during a soccer match in Taylorsville. Portillo died at the hospital after a week in a coma.
Jeff Foote, 39 » May 25. The Washington Terrace man was shot and killed by a Weber County a sheriff’s deputy while police were trying to talk him out of taking his own life. As a deputy and Foote spoke, Foote apparently discharged his gun and an officer returned fire.
Chanse Drew, 2 » June 9. Police suspect that Chanse’s father shot him at his Spanish Fork home before turning the gun on himself.
Arla Christensen, 85 » June 20. Christensen’s grandson-in-law is believed to have beaten her to death with a golf club. The man’s wife called 911 to report the attack and that her husband was having a psychotic episode, according to the Sandy police.
Melvin Rowley, 79 » June 26. Police say that Rowley’s stepson arrived at their Orem house, where an argument concerning alcohol ensued, and the stepson hit Rowley several times. Rowley told his wife he was fine,but she later found him unconscious and not breathing. Despite efforts to revive him, Rowley died at the hospital.
Christopher Miller, 52 » July 6. Miller was found dead in the living room at his Vernal apartment, having died from being strangled and hit in the head. Since no one had forced entry into the residence, police suspect that Miller knew his assailant.
Debra Eatchel, 53 » July 22. Eatchel was shot by her ex-husband outside of his Salt Lake City home. He then turned the gun on himself.
LeRoy Martinez, 56 » July 27. A man died after he was choked in a fight in Ogden. Charges were never filed, according to the police.
Anthony Hernandez, 18 » July 27. Hernandez was shot while walking on the street in West Valley City. Police said Hernandez’s death was gang-related.
Mary Ann Day, 47 » July 29. St. George police determined that Day’s husband killed her in a murder-suicide.
David Gonzales, 28 » Aug. 31. Gonzales’ body was discovered on the sidewalk after Salt Lake City dispatchers received a 911 hang-up call. The suspect turned himself in to police by the end of the day.
Robert Soto Jr., 26 » Aug. 31. Ogden police found Soto, who had been shot multiple times, lying on the sidewalk. Police are still looking for a suspect. Witnesses reported hearing an argument and gunshots in the early morning hours of the shooting.
Derek Johnson, 32 » Sept. 1. Johnson, a Draper police sergeant, stopped to investigate an oddly parked car when the car’s owner shot him, police say. Johnson then turned the gun on himself and his girlfriend, though both of them survived, according to police.
Thai Le, 44 » Sept. 2. Le and his girlfriend were at a Labor Day barbecue in West Valley City when the two got into an argument, according to court documents. At some point that night, Le’s girlfriend retrieved a knife from the kitchen and stabbed him in the back, the documents add.
Eli Rutchey, 2 » Sept. 4. Deputies found out about the Cache County toddler’s death shortly after his mother went to Logan Regional Hospital for emergency medical treatment for herself. She later told officers she had suffocated her son, court documents add; she had then tried to kill herself by overdosing on medication.Next Page >
