A 26-year-old New Mexico man was behind bars Monday facing 18 felony and misdemeanor counts after his arrest following the theft of a hotel shuttle van, chase and crash in Salt Lake City.

Police said Salt Lake City officers responding to a 911 call from the Red Lion, at 161 W. 600 South, about 6:20 p.m. Sunday sighted the stolen van stopped at a nearby intersection. When an SLCPD cruiser attempted to pull the van over, the driver pulled away, nearly striking an officer approaching from its passenger side.

During the ensuing chase, the suspect allegedly drove the wrong way down a one-way street before striking another vehicle. The suspect abandoned the van and attempted to run from the scene but was chased down by officers a short distance away.

He was booked into Salt Lake County Jail in lieu of nearly $40,000 bail on suspicion of numerous felony and misdemeanor counts ranging from motor vehicle theft, aggravated assault and fleeing police to theft, disorderly conduct, leaving the scene of an accident, public intoxication and providing false information.
