'Twas nearly the week before Christmas and all near the house, not a creature was stirring...

Well almost no creatures, except for a pair of brazen Grinches in a pickup taking delivered packages off Lyle Hardy's porch.

Hardy's surveillance cameras at his Holladay home caught the thieves — a man and a woman — pulling into his driveway Friday afternoon in a blue pickup with what appears to be a small fridge or freezer in the truck bed. The couple then strolls up and down his sidewalk, making off with the Hardy family's Christmas gifts.

Hardy said FedEx had delivered five packages and the U.S. Postal Service four more about 12:30 p.m. Friday.

Less than an hour after the packages were dropped off, the surveillance camera captured the duo rubbernecking in the roadway then quickly pulling into the driveway.

"It looked like the person was trolling for gifts," Hardy said.

Within two minutes the two had Grinch-napped all but one of Hardy's packages. They made off with about $1,000 worth of Christmas gifts and about $4,000 worth of items destined for a home the Hardy family is building.

Hardy released the video Sunday in hopes that the public can help Unified police identify the duo before they strike again.

He said the cameras are in inconspicuous locations, so the couple probably didn't know they were caught on video tape.

Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said year-round there are always people who steal packages, but there hasn't been a spike this holiday season.

Anyone with information about the stolen packages is asked to call Unified police at 801-743-7000.
