Salt Lake sheriff warns of scam where caller poses as cop
Police are investigating a scam in which Millcreek residents are receiving calls from someone posing a sheriff's employee and threatening arrest if a fine is not paid.
The caller, claiming to be from the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office, has told victims that they failed to show up for jury duty and that warrants have been issued for their arrest, Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal wrote Thursday in a press statement. The caller orders the victims to send money to a certain address and provides a false docket number for them to write on the envelope.
The caller then tells the victims they will be arrested if they do not pay, Hoyal wrote.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call is asked to confirm with Salt Lake County dispatchers at 801-743-7000. Dispatchers will verify whether an officer is searching for them.
