Prosecutors have charged the driver allegedly involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident in Salt Lake City last month.
Deryk Thomas Robledo, 19, was charged Monday in 3rd District Court with leaving the scene of an accident involving a death, a third-degree felony, and failure to stop or yield, a class C misdemeanor.
On Nov. 25, officers responded to a hit-and-run crash near 1000 W. 1700 South and found 73-year-old Genero Zaragoza-Valencia lying in the roadway with serious injuries. He was taken to the hospital but died the next day.
Witnesses saw a silver vehicle driving south on 1000 West strike Zaragoza-Valencia, then kept going, according to the charges. Information provided to the police, combined with a search of police records, led officers to identify Robledo as the suspect, the charges add.
On Nov. 30, police recovered the vehicle Robeldo is believed to have been driving — described as a silver BMW model 3 Series— in a garage at a Woods Cross residence.
"The windshield was shattered and appeared to have blood and hair in the glass. The BMW also had dents and other damage consistent with the evidence officers observed at the scene of the hit and run [crash]," the charges read. Police arrested Robledo the same day at his parents’ Salt Lake City home.
Robledo is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Thursday.
