A Hill Air Force Base employee died Sunday after his snowmobile rolled down a mountainside.
The 22-year-old was out with three friends in the Monte Cristo area of Weber County. About 2 p.m., the group was riding down a steep hill in the Dry Bread area, but when three of them reached the bottom and could not see or hear their companion, they went looking for him, said Weber County Sheriff's Sgt. Lane Findlay.
The trio found him pinned under the front of his snowmobile — but after they and a couple passersby got it off of him, they found that he was not breathing and did not have a pulse. A member of the man's group used a satellite device to signal for help to the remote area, while someone else called for help on a cell phone.
But emergency responders pronounced the man dead at the scene.
"He was doing everything we tell people to do when they go to the backcountry," Findlay said — wearing protective gear, riding in a group and going prepared with emergency equipment. "It's just a terrible, tragic accident."
The man lived in Davis County and was an active-duty airman at Hill Air Force Base, as were two other members of his group. The sheriff's office is waiting to identify him until the base can notify his next of kin, who may be out of state.
