A 26-year-old man remained in critical condition Tuesday, the day after he was run down by a car in downtown Salt Lake City.

Salt Lake City police Detective Dennis McGowan said the collision occurred at 10:23 p.m. Monday in the intersection of 200 South and 300 West.

That is in an area of facilities offering shelter and services to the city's homeless population, but police on Tuesday declined to identify the victim or did not know if he may have been a transient.

McGowan said the man was crossing the intersection when hit by the southbound vehicle, but police were not initially sure if he was in a crosswalk at the time.

Police said the man, who suffered head injuries, was rushed to a local hospital.

No citations were issued to the driver but the incident remained under investigation.
