A second person has been arrested in connection to a hit-and-run that killed a 2-year-old boy in a stroller several months ago in West Valley City.
In jail documents filed Tuesday, West Valley City police wrote that Rodolfo Munoz lied to police about his daughter's alleged role in the death of Gavyn Barnett, who was being pushed in a stroller June 10 near 5600 West and 4005 South when a car hit him and his family.
Kimberly Munoz, 21, was arrested this weekend on suspicion of third-degree felony hit and run and misdemeanor improper lookout after her ex-boyfriend turned her in, police said.
Two witnesses told investigators that Rodolfo Munoz also knew the details of the crash, but he lied several times to police during questioning, according to jail documents.
The fatal accident occurred about 9:45 p.m. on June 10, as Angela Barnett was crossing an uncontrolled portion of 5600 West near 4005 South with her two children, Serrena, 9, and Gavyn, who was in a stroller, said Sgt. Jason Hauer.
As Barnett crossed the street, a vehicle in the inside travel lane stopped or slowed to allow her to pass, but as the stroller entered the next lane, Munoz allegedly struck the stroller.
Gavyn Barnett later died from his injuries at Primary Children's Hospital.
Hauer said Munoz — who admitted not wearing her glasses while driving — briefly pulled over before driving away. He said she later claimed she fled because she was scared.
Hauer said police had located the vehicle believed to have been involved in the crash, and it matched the description of the vehicle being sought.
