University of Utah Health Care on Monday broke ground in Murray for its new Midvalley Health Center, which will provide dermatology care and ophthalmology services from the Moran Eye Center.
It may also provide space for expanded services in the future.
The state Board of Regents approved $19.4 million for land acquisition by the University of Utah a year ago to purchase the site for the Murray clinic and a site for a planned multi-specialty clinic in Farmington.
The nine-acre parcel in Murray, 243 E. 6100 South, north of Fashion Place Mall, cost $14 million.
"This location is the best we could find," said Randy Olson, CEO of the U.'s Moran Eye Center, in November 2012 . "It has access from all the major freeways. In the new environment of the Affordable Care Act, we need to be very patient friendly."
The eye center and the Department of Dermatology have been leasing space in the mid-valley, and they will consolidate in the new 81,000-square-foot building, estimated to be completed in December 2014.
The project's $30 million cost was to be financed from hospital reserve funds and $10 million in revenue bonds the Legislature approved, Olson explained.
