Teachers convicted of criminal sex abuse face automatic revocation of their licenses under state law.
Educators in Utah prosecuted for alleged sexual misconduct in 2013 include:
Hadley D. Christensen • The 39-year-old former fifth-grade teacher of Nephi was charged in January in the alleged sexual assault of one of his former students. The teacher at Red Cliffs Elementary School in the Juab School District allegedly invited an 11-year-old girl, whom he taught the year before, to his home on Dec. 22 and sexually assaulted her. Hadley was later acquitted.
Scott Ray McMurray • A longtime Ogden school teacher, McMurray, 59, was charged in January with multiple felonies in connection with allegedly sexually abusing two children younger than 14. He had been employed as a teacher for 16 years and taught sixth grade at Heritage Elementary School. He was subsequently sentenced to at least 30 years in prison.
Broch Clyde DeGraff • The 28-year-old former Pleasant Grove teacher pleaded guilty in February to reduced charges after being accused of sexually abusing two 16-year-old girls. DeGraff was a kindergarten teacher and soccer coach at Liahona Preparatory Academy when police allege he had sexual encounters with the students.
Courtney Louise Jarrell • A former Riverton High School math and basketball teacher, Jarrell, 23, was charged in April in the alleged sexual abuse of a 17-year-old student. The encounter allegedly occurred while the teen was at the teacher's Salt Lake County residence.
Gaile Kristine Supp • The 25-year-old ex-Clearfield High School teacher was charged with a felony sex crime in late April for allegedly forcing a sexual encounter with a 17-year-old student. Police alleged Supp invited the student to her West Haven house in January to help her with homework, showed her a film with a sex scene and proceeded to sexually abuse her.
Jamie Waite • Waite, a 37-year-old former Ben Lomond High School swim coach, was sentenced in April to serve 210 days in jail for her conviction on four counts of forcible sexual abuse, allegedly involving a 17-year-old.
Charles Weber • Weber, now 66, a former Soldier Hollow Charter School principal, was sentenced in May to 10 years in prison. Deputy Wasatch County Attorney McKay King said evidence showed Weber's pattern of grooming and engaging in inappropriate conduct with young boys appeared to span his 40-year career. He faced new charges in July.
Stephen Niedzwiecki • The former Kaysville charter school teacher and Weber State University adjunct faculty member was ordered in May to face trial on charges of forcible sodomy of a teen. Police alleged Niedzwiecki, now 33, first became acquainted with the victim when she was a 14-year-old student of Jefferson Academy, a charter school.
Steven Richard Smith • The 40-year-old former Brighton High School choir teacher was sentenced to a year of probation in July after he pleaded guilty to a charge of texting a student in what prosecutors have described as an inappropriate manner. In exchange for his plea, prosecutors dropped two sex charges — sexual solicitation and possession of pornography on school property — with which Smith had originally been charged in August 2012.
