A Sanpete County man remained in critical condition Tuesday, the day after being involved in a head-on crash that killed a 42-year-old woman.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said the crash occurred about 7 a.m. Monday on U.S. Highway 89, about 3 miles north of Gunnison.

Kay Marie Matthews was driving northbound near mile post 246 when she struck a deer carcass and lost control of her car, crossing the center line and striking a Toyota sedan head-on that was driven by Brady Kyle Simons, 19.

Matthews later died at Gunnison Valley Hospital. Simons was evacuated by medical helicopter to an unspecified hospital in very critical condition.
