A West Valley City infant nearly drowned Thursday afternoon and remained in critical condition hours later.

The 9-month-old girl fell head-first into a five gallon bucket about 1:48 p.m., according to West Valley City Fire Marshal Bob Fitzgerald. Medical crews arrived moments later and found police holding the girl outside a home at 71 West Ben Dixon Ave.

Fitzgerald said crews resuscitated the girl and cleared an air passage and took her to a nearby hospital. A helicopter then transported the girl to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City.

The girl remained in extremely critical condition Thursday evening, Fitzgerald added.
