A 24-year-old man arrested in the armed robbery of a Weber County convenience store has told detectives that the clerk, his mother, was in on the crime.
Sheriff's Lt. Mark Lowther said Friday that the man was arrested and booked into the Weber County Jail on suspicion of aggravated robbery, aggravated kidnapping and possession of a firearm by a restricted person.
"He's since bailed out, but he's given us two confessions, one implicating himself and then another also implicating his mother. She has adamantly denied the claim, though, and this is still an open investigation," Lowther said.
The mother, a clerk at the Maverik store, 502 N. 2000 West in the Marriott-Slaterville area, had not been arrested as of Friday.
Lowther said the case began Sunday morning when the woman was leaving the store to make a bank deposit and allegedly was accosted at gunpoint by a masked man. He purportedly forced her to drive to a nearby park, bound her to the steering wheel, took the store's receipts and drove away in another vehicle.
A passing motorist reportedly came to her aid, cutting her loose and calling 911.
During questioning, the woman indicated she wanted to call her son to be with her. Lowther said it turned out that the son was driving a suspicious vehicle that matched one a witness had seen parked earlier Sunday morning in the park.
At first, the man told police the robbery was his idea and that his mother was unaware he was the holdup man. Later, though, he said they had planned the crime together.
