Mother cat, four kittens tossed onto freeway in Utah

Someone in a truck tossed five cats onto the freeway Wednesday in Davis County, and a pair of kittens are the sole survivors of the ordeal.

The cats were tossed out the window of a maroon truck heading south on Interstate 15 between Layton and Kaysville, according to Davis County Animal Shelter assistant director Tracy Roddom. There were two people in the truck, and they tossed out a "momma cat and four babies," Roddom said.

A woman saw cats being thrown out the window and circled back around in the other direction, where she found two surviving kittens.

"She was able to find them on the side of the freeway, which was amazing," Roddom said.

The cats were not tossed onto the freeway in a bag, as some earlier reports suggested, Roddom added.

The woman brought the kittens to the animal shelter, where Roddom said they will be cared for until someone adopts them. They have not been given names by shelter workers, though Roddom said they probably will be in the future.

Roddom also said the shelter is conducting an investigation into the incident. Local and national humane societies have offered a $5,000 reward for information in the case, according to KUTV. Anyone with information about the truck or the cats is urged to call shelter authorities at 801-444-2200.
