A motorist suspected of being intoxicated may have learned the hard way that it's just not a good idea to hide in a canal in freezing weather.

The Utah Highway Patrol said the 29-year-old man was attempting to hide on Sunday after a chase on Interstate 80 in Summit County where he allegedly was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes.

Troopers said after avoiding spike strips, the man crashed into a trooper's vehicle about 1 a.m., then fled on foot.

Troopers said they found the man about 10 minutes later hiding in the canal, which was full of water.

The temperature was 25 degrees, officials said.

The trooper whose car was rammed was not injured.
