Two Davis County men were behind bars Friday, booked into jail after having allegedly gone on a drunken shooting spree in pursuit of two teenage boys the night before.
Layton police Lt. Shawn Horton said that public safety dispatchers received several 911 calls, beginning at 10:45 p.m. Thursday, reporting gunshots and a vehicle speeding away from the area of 1100 East and 2500 North.
Fifteen minutes later more calls came in, this time reporting gunshots being fired from one vehicle chasing another in the area of Antelope and Sunset Drive.
Moments later, police located and stopped the suspect vehicle, a Ford Explorer, and at gunpoint took two men and a 17-year-old Layton female into custody. One of the men, a 27-year-old Kaysville man, had to be wrestled to the ground by officers to be handcuffed; the second man, a 20-year-old from Layton, was arrested without incident.
Meanwhile, two 17-year-old Layton males drove to the police department offices to tell investigators then had met the two male suspects earlier Thursday evening while driving off-road near the east end of Antelope Drive.
When the teen boys left, the suspects allegedly followed; a short time later the teens heard numerous gunshots.
Horton said detectives believe the shots came from a .45-caliber handgun officers located inside the Explorer.
Both of the male suspects were intoxicated during the incident, detectives determined.
Horton said the 17-year-old female, who was dismissed as a suspect after questioning, told police she was in fear for her life during the incident.
The two male suspects remained in the Davis County Jail on Friday, booked on suspicion of two counts of third-degree felony aggravated assault and numerous misdemeanors ranging from possession of a firearm by an intoxicated person, resisting arrest and discharge of a firearm within city limits to reckless driving and reckless endangerment.
The men also were being investigated in connection with at least four other reports of gunshots being fired in various Davis County locations over the past week, Horton said.
