A 56-year-old man had been upgraded to serious condition by Wednesday, the day after he was struck by a car while crossing a street near the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon.

The man, initially reported to be in critical condition with head and other injuries, was hit about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday as he rode across Wasatch Boulevard (3500 East) to enter the canyon.

The driver of the northbound Toyota sedan that struck the bicyclist was not hurt.

Cottonwood Heights Police Sgt. Mark Askerlund said the victim was transported to Intermountain Medical Center, where he showed signs of improvement by Wednesday.

"He's been stablized and has been conversing with visitors, but he still sustained some serious head injuries," Askerlund said.

The victim's identity was not released and blame for the accident had not yet been determined by investigators.
