Layton police on Monday found $50,000 worth of marijuana in the duffel bag of a man suspected of transporting drugs from California to Utah.

Police had been investigating the man, 35, when an officer pulled him over for a traffic violation on Interstate 15 near Hill Field Road on Monday evening, said Sgt. Brady Fitzpatrick.

Officers found 10 pounds of marijuana in a duffel bag in the trunk of his rental car, Fitzpatrick said. A confidential informant previously told police the man had sold him drugs, Fitzpatrick said.

The drugs are believed to have come from California, but Fitzpatrick would not say which city. He also would not say whether police knew the intended destination for sale.

The suspect is a Utah resident, but Fitzpatrick would not say which town he lived in.

He had not been charged as of Tuesday night.
