A Springville man is accused of making pipe bombs at his home.

In charges filed Monday, police wrote that they went to the man's house Oct. 13 because a caller reported he was making and setting off pipe bombs there.

The man told police he was "setting off homemade fireworks" made of paper and gunpowder, police wrote. But while he was showing his gun powder to the officers, they saw plastic pipes with caps and wires attached to the ends, police wrote.

The man said they were filled with gunpowder, and he used a car battery to ignite them. He said he planned to set off the plastic pipe explosives "up in the mountains" because of the risk of shrapnel, police wrote.

The man, 35, was charged with second-degree felony recklessness.
