Cache County toddler had been dead nearly two weeks

An autopsy and forensic tests have determined that a 2-year-old boy, whose body was found after his mother sought medical treatment for herself, had already been dead at least 10 days.

Cache County Attorney James Swink told The Herald Journal Friday that while the State Medical Examiner's Office found that Eli Rutchey had been long deceased when he remains were found inside a River Heights home on Sept. 4, a specific cause of death remained undetermined.

Cache County sheriff's deputies made the discovery shortly after the child's mother, 42-year-old Heidi Rutchey, came to Logan Regional Hospital seeking medical treatment.

Hospital staff, learning of the child, were concerned for his well-being and notified law enforcement authorities to check on his welfare.

Swink said investigators and prosecutors were screening possible charges, but it could be weeks before they decide what they may be.
