A traffic stop, an uncooperative driver, a recovered stolen vehicle and subsequent search warrants has led to a major burglary bust, West Valley City police say.

Police Sgt. Jason Hauer said Friday that a 35-year-old man was in custody and detectives were searching for at least two other suspects in several burglaries and cases of credit card and bank check fraud.

The man was stopped about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday by Metro Gangs detectives on an unspecified West Valley City street and then turned over the West Valley officers for questioning about the theft of a car found abandoned earlier this month.

"[The suspect] was not cooperative with officers in interviews," Hauer said. "[But] evidence and information gathered from the abandoned stolen vehicle led [to search warrants which] produced further evidence implicating [him] and other yet unidentified suspects in several burglaries and incidents of fraud."

A search at the man's residence turned up drug paraphernalia and stolen property from several burglaries, ranging from credit cards and business checks to laptop computers.

Then, investigators learned that the suspect also had a storage unit, where further searching turned up a stolen motorcycle and a cache of other purloined property including printers and other electronic items taken during a break-in at a Staples office supply store.

The suspect was booked into Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of second-degree felony possession of a stolen vehicle and third-degree fleeing from police.

Hauer said additional charges, ranging from auto theft, fraud and identity theft to burglary are being screened.
