Salt Lake City is dedicating eight new parcels of land to expand the current two-garden Green City Growers program to 10 plots, Mayor Ralph Becker announced Thursday.

The program is operated in conjunction with Wasatch Community Gardens.

Residents are encouraged to review the available parcels on SLCgreen.com and, if interested, complete an application for the organization and creation of a community garden.

Applications are due by Dec. 1.

The announcement coincides with local celebrations for Food Day, a nationwide movement for healthy, affordable and sustainable food.

"Salt Lake City recognizes the important role community vegetable gardens play in supporting our local food system," Becker said.
