A Salina man reportedly wrested a gun away from another man — even after he was shot in the head and neck.
In charges filed Tuesday, police wrote that the victim, 22, called 911 on Oct. 10 to report he'd been shot and was walking to the police station. An officer found the man bleeding from his head as he walked down 100 North. The officer saw a gunshot wound to the man's neck and another wound on his temple. The victim told the officer he had grabbed the gun away from the shooter; he gave the gun to the officer before he was taken to a hospital.
A witness said he walked in on an argument at the home of the accused shooter, a 35-year-old Salina man. The shooter allegedly told the victim to sit down, which he did but then stood up again, police wrote. That's when the gun fired, the witness told police.
The two men fought over the gun, which fired a second time before the victim got control of it, police wrote. The victim and witness fled, but the shooter got into the witness' truck while he was starting the engine, police wrote. The shooter asked for a ride, so the witness said he circled the block and dropped the man off back at his house.
The victim underwent surgery to have a bullet fragment removed from his scalp, police wrote. On his way to the hospital he told medics the argument was over a cellphone.
The 35-year-old man was charged with first-degree felony attempted murder and second-degree felony obstructing justice. He was jailed on $500,000 bail.
