There was some encouraging news Tuesday for a toddler hospitalized since being found unconscious in a Morgan County irrigation ditch over the weekend.

Morgan County Chief Deputy Sheriff Kevin Edwards said the 1-year-old boy reportedly had shown signs of brain activity late Monday when doctors briefly roused him from a medically induced coma.

"He responded to his mother's voice, so that's more of a positive outlook," Edwards said.

The child, who remains in critical condition at Primary Children's Hospital, wandered away from his family's home on Stoddard Lane in Weber Canyon about 11:30 a.m. Saturday. He was found shortly thereafter in the ditch, which was partially filled with water.
