A gunshot victim died Wednesday night as police in South Salt Lake continued trying to unravel details of the shooting.

The victim died shortly after he was admitted to Pioneer Valley Hospital about 8 p.m. Wednesday, police Sgt. Gary Keller confirmed Thursday evening. Hospital officials called police, who were able to learn little beyond that the shooting was believed to have occurred earlier Wednesday evening near 200 East and 3300 South.

"We don't have a lot of new information at this point," Keller said Thursday. "We're still trying to establish the crime scene" and details about how the shooting transpired.

Detectives combed several blocks around the reported address of the shooting, but they were unable to find blood, bullet casings or any other evidence, Keller said. Investigators have not been able to confirm that the shooting took place in South Salt Lake or even whether it was a deliberate homicide, an accident or a suicide.

The victim's family has asked police not to release his name, age or hometown, Keller said.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call South Salt Lake police at 801-840-4000.
