A FrontRunner commuter train struck a pedestrian Friday morning in Salt Lake City. The man, who lost an arm in the accident, was in critical condition after surgery.
Salt Lake City police Detective Cody Lougy said witnesses told investigators that the man, in his 20s, was listening to his iPod on headphones when he darted into the path of the northbound train about 7:48 a.m. at 1700 S. 650 West.
Lougy said witnesses told police the victim had just a moment before climbed through a nearby stopped freight train before dashing in front of the FrontRunner.
Lougy confirmed that one of the man's arms was severed, but he was expected to survive.
The FrontRunner train involved in the accident was released by investigators from the scene about 9 a.m.
Utah Transit Authority spokesman Remi Barron said FrontRunner traffic through the area generally had slowed, but otherwise continued operations.
