A suspected car thief upgraded from one stolen ride to another.
The thief arrived at the Cottonwood Heights Target store, at 7025 Park Centre Drive, late Sunday afternoon in a stolen 1997 Honda Civic, said Cottonwood Heights Police Sgt. Mark Askerlund.
Someone had reported the Civic as stolen recently out of the Unified Police Department's jurisdiction, but Askerlund was not sure how long ago or where, specifically.
The suspect reportedly looked inside a 2007 Honda Civic, walked into the store for a moment, then walked back to the parking lot and left in the newer model, Askerlund said.
"So they're upgrading," he added.
Police are trying to review the surveillance footage to see if they can make out the suspect's identity.
Honda sedans are popular among car thieves. More than 450 Hondas, mostly Civics and Accords with model years between 1990 and 2000, have been stolen and recovered this year, according to the Salt Lake City police. The auto-theft unit also recovered an additional 125 Hondas that were stolen from nearby jurisdictions.
