Deputies from the San Juan County Sheriff's Office are working to identify the remains of a decomposed body found floating in Lake Powell on Friday afternoon.
Deputies and park rangers from the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area responded to the Lake Canyon area after a group of boaters reported finding the body there at around noon Wednesday.
The body was decomposed and looked to have been there for a long time, according to a statement from the sheriff's office. The office said it had not received any recent missing person reports in that area and there was the no evidence of foul play.
On Sept. 28, 2007, a Colorado couple was killed in Lake Powell after a large slab of rock fell on their small fishing boat. The body of Mary Simmons was later recovered but her husband, Donald Simmons, was never found.
Officials believe that the body found on Wednesday could be that of Donald Simmons, but an official identification will be made at the Utah Medical Examiner's Office in Salt Lake City.
