An 11-month-old girl was in critical condition Tuesday after police suspect the man who was watching her shook her.
A 25-year-old Layton man and his 20-year-old girlfriend brought the unresponsive baby to the Davis Hospital emergency room Tuesday morning, and she was transferred to Primary Children's Medical Center to be treated for life-threatening injuries.
Medical evidence indicates that the baby's injuries are consistent with "shaken baby syndrome," according to a police news release.
Layton detectives determined that the man, whose live-in girlfriend is the baby's mother, was at home with the baby while the girlfriend was at work when the injuries occurred.
Through a combination of evidence and statements from the man, detectives determined he had become frustrated with the baby's crying, shook her and threw her on the bed.
The man then left the home with the baby, picked up his girlfriend at work and they went to the hospital.
Police said they planned to book the man into the Davis County jail on suspicion of second-degree felony child abuse.
