A Salt Lake City man died Monday, the day before his 73rd birthday, in a crash on East Canyon Road near Mountain Dell Reservoir.

James Robb was driving south on East Canyon Road when his silver Mercedes SUV apparently veered off the road, colliding with a bridge embankment near where the road meets Interstate 80, said Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal. No one witnessed the accident, Hoyal added.

A Utah Department of Transportation employee, who was getting off I-80 at the East Canyon exit saw the crashed SUV and reported it about 12:37 p.m.

"Speed was probably factor in the accident," Hoyal said.

Robb, 72, was to celebrate his birthday on Tuesday, Hoyal said.
