The alleged victim of a man accused of gunning down a Draper police officer has been arrested and accused of giving police fake versions of the shooting.
Traci Lee Vaillancourt, 34, was released from a hospital late Saturday and arrested on two counts of suspicion of obstruction of justice, both first-degree felonies.
According to the probable cause statement released by the Salt Lake County Jail, investigators spoke with Vaillancourt on Sept. 1, 4 and 7, but all three statements were found to be inconsistent based on physical evidence from the scene.
Vaillancourt is the girlfriend of Timothy "Troy" Walker, 35, who is accused of fatally shooting Draper police Sgt. Derek Johnson, Vaillancourt and then himself. Walker remained hospitalized Sunday. Police last reported he was listed in serious condition.
Police said that Johnson, 32, pulled up on Sept. 1 to a silver Volvo that was parked at an odd angle at 13200 South and Fort Street (900 East) and was ambushed by Walker. Police allege Walker shot Johnson as he sat inside his patrol vehicle.
Police believe Walker then attempted to kill Vaillancourt and himself in a failed murder-suicide bid. The jail’s probable cause statement identifies Vaillancourt as "a victim" of the shooting.
Meanwhile Saturday, the law firm of Pearson Butler and Carson released a statement saying they had been hired to represent Vaillancourt’s family in an effort to gain access to her and information about her.
"We understand it’s been a difficult time for our community’s police force and that given the sensitivity of the investigation, seeing Traci could be difficult," the law firm wrote. "But we’ve been a week without any contact from her or any information besides what we hear from the news. No one in the Vaillancourt family has been able to see her or speak with her, and they are desperate for news. … Her family would like to tell her that they are here for her and they are praying for her speedy recovery."
