September is Hunger Action Month and food banks nationwide are uniting to help stock pantry shelves and nourish those in need.
Close to half a million Utahns suffer from food insecurity, according to the Utah Food Bank's website. On Thursday, staff and volunteers lined a mile's worth of food items along the east side of Salt Lake City's State Street, starting at city hall and stretching north to the steps of the state Capitol.
Gov. Gary Herbert spoke at the Capitol Thursday to kick off the "Beating Hunger By a Mile" event. Food-gathering and fund-raising efforts continue through September. More information can be found online at http://www.utahfoodbank.org/hungeractionmonth.
