A mother's visit to a Logan hospital emergency room led police to her River Heights home, where they found the body of her 2-year-old son.
Cache County sheriff's Lt. Chad Jensen said Thursday that the investigation was just getting underway, and the medical examiner's office could not immediately determine what caused Eli Rutchey's death. Pathology and toxicology tests were still pending.
Deputies said they had obtained a search warrant for the house and planned to serve it Thursday afternoon.
He declined to detail what, if any, physical injuries the child may have sustained.
The boy's 42-year-old mother, Heidi Rutchey — initially examined at Logan Regional Hospital about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday — was transferred to a Salt Lake City area hospital for evaluation.
Deputies did not release any information about why the mother had gone to the hospital in the first place, citing the ongoing investigation. Authorities did say that when the woman showed up at the hospital there were questions about Eli's welfare.
Jensen said when deputies arrived late Wednesday afternoon at the home, near 400 East and 400 South, they found the boy's body.
