Salt Lake City police have arrested one suspect and are looking for others in a weekend robbery and beating near a downtown homeless shelter that left a man in critical condition.

Detective Dennis McGowan said that a 48-year-old man was taken into custody Monday in connection with the early Sunday morning attack on the 56-year-old victim, who had just exited a taxi cab at 500 W. 200 South.

Police said that within moments of the cab leaving the scene just after midnight Sunday, the suspect and three other men confronted the victim, taking his wallet and then beating him.

The victim remained in critical condition at an area hospital on Tuesday.

The arrested suspect remained in Salt Lake County Jail without bail on suspicion of second-degree felony aggravated assault.

A probable cause statement noted that the suspect had, after being advise of his right to remain silent, admitted to attacking the victim.
