UHP troopers forced to shoot cows wandering I-15

First Published Sep 03 2013 08:22 am • Last Updated Sep 03 2013 02:24 pm

Utah Highway Patrol troopers were forced to shoot two cows after they wandered into traffic on Interstate 15 along the Weber-Box Elder county line.

UHP Cpl. Todd Johnson said the incident occurred just after 8 p.m. Monday in the northbound lanes near Pleasant View. It took about an hour for troopers, aided by Weber County sheriff’s deputies, to chase down the animals, which had wandered onto the freeway from a nearby pasture.

Hoyal said the decision eventually was made to "put down" the cows when their continued risk to vehicles and drivers, as well as officers trying unsuccessfully to corral them, was deemed too dangerous.

UHP was trying to identify and locate the owners of the cattle on Tuesday.
