A security guard sustained a minor knife wound while struggling with a shoplifting suspect Friday morning at a west Salt Lake City Walmart Supercenter Store.

The 911 call came from the store, located at 350 W. Hope Avenue (about 1350 South), at 8:07 a.m. Salt Lake City police said the male suspect was taken into in custody by arriving officers.

SLCPD spokesman Dennis McGowan said the guard's injury proved superficial; he was treated at the scene and released.

The man had been approached by security personnel at the store after they allegedly witnessed him shoplifting. As employees attempted to detain him, the suspect pulled out a folding knife and cut one guard on the arm at least once, McGowan said.

The 29-year-old suspect was booked into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of aggravated robbery.
