Two small wildfires in Provo caused a lot of smoke Friday afternoon, but new rain slowed their growth significantly.
The first lightning-sparked fire was burning on about one-tenth of an acre on top of Buckley Peak, south of Y Mountain, according to Forest Service spokeswoman Loyal Clark. Officials learned of the fire about 8 a.m. Clark said it was not growing and did not pose any danger to residents or hikers, though she said early afternoon winds were kicking up a lot of smoke.
The second fire, also caused by lightning, flared about noon just below the "Y" overlooking Provo. The fire never got any bigger than about one-tenth of an acre, Clark said.
By 2 p.m., precipitation moved in, and both fires were no longer visible. Clark said an engine was parked at the trail head parking lot below Y Mountain to monitor the fire, but as of Friday evening, there was no more fire activity to be seen.
Clark also advised people heading outdoors for the holiday weekend to exercise extreme caution. She said drought conditions have left wildlands highly susceptible to wildfire and campers should take extra precautions with campfires.
