Provo Police and SWAT team members arrested a man at a home on Friday afternoon, more than three hours after he reportedly fired a gun in his backyard

The 34-year-old man was taken into police custody just after 1 p.m., according to police.

Provo Police. Lt. Mathew Siufanua said police were called to a home near 1074 S. 680 West at around 9:30 a.m. Friday on calls that gunshots were heard in the area.

"There is an individual at the house who is intoxicated and upset about marital issues he's going through," said Siufanua earlier Friday. "He did shoot multiple rounds in the backyard."

Police had said they did not believe there was anyone else inside the home, and no one was injured during the incident.

Several homes in the area were evacuated as a precaution, Siufanua said. Also, a nearby frontage road, along with 680 West was closed as about 30 officers worked to secure the scene.

Siufanua said the man eventually came out of his home as a police robot was near the front door. He surrendered without incident.

It is unclear why the man stayed in the house for so long, Siufanua said, but he added that detectives were interviewing the suspect Friday afternoon.

"We don't know what happened in the house," he said.
