Alta Ski Area and Tree Utah are looking for a few volunteers Sept. 7 to help plant 1,800 trees around the Little Cottonwood Canyon resort.
The event promises to be "rugged and rewarding," said Maura Olivos, Alta's sustainability coordinator, noting that participants will hike, take a lift or ride a shuttle to areas in need of the 1,500 limber pines and 300 Engelmann spruce seedlings that will be planted.
Volunteers 16 and older will begin their day at 8 a.m. at Alta's Albion parking lot. At 9:30 a.m., they will be joined by kids 8 and older taking part in the tree planting through sponsor Whole Food Market's "Kids Day of Service." Both groups will get lunch when the project is done at 1 p.m.
Only 100 volunteers will be accepted. Registration is required through Tree Utah, a nonprofit group dedicated to tree planting, stewardship and education. To sign up, go to http://www.treeutah.org. Additional information is available at volunteer@treeutah.org.
Olivos encouraged participants to bring a water bottle, sunscreen, gloves, sturdy shoes, snacks, a hat and a raincoat.
