Why did Gov. Gary Herbert and Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder cross the road?
To surprise a delighted Leora Farnsworth, a crossing guard for the past 39 years in Holladay, and thank her for her service.
Herbert and Winder delivered hugs, flowers and a plaque to Farnsworth on East Spring Lane, highlighting her efforts "as just one example of the great work crossing guards do to ensure that our children are safe as they go to and from school."
The governor also proclaimed Friday as Crossing Guard Appreciation Day.
"I have loved this job," said Farnsworth, 79. "I have never called in sick." While working with kids, "a smile goes a long way," she said. "You have to have a smile on your face for the children."
She intends to stay at her post, she added.
"I so want to keep on truckin'," she said. "I don't want my tires to go flat."
