A new bar has been set for big tippers on Ogden's Historic 25th Street.

At 12:30 a.m. Saturday, a patron used an American Express card to tip $5,000 on a $214.75 tab at Brewskis. The following night, a man with a rare American Express Centurion Card left a $1,000 tip on a $49 tab at a bar called Alleged.

"The staff was completely floored," said Jared Allen, owner of Alleged, which has been open about three months. The benevolent guest didn't hold a grudge, apparently, despite being told by staff that he couldn't order a double or a sidecar, or take his drink outside the premises. Alleged uses a mobile payment app that only allows tips up to 100 percent of the total bill, so the bartenders had to call over the manager, Jared's brother Mike, to accommodate a 2,041 percent gratuity. Mike asked the customer if he'd heard correctly. He had.

Jared Allen said the tip was split among three bartenders and one server. At Alleged, bartenders receive the tips and they are not required to share with servers, but they agreed to do so.

"I let staff decide how they want to do it," Allen said "They all seem to be really generous with each other."

Brewskis did not respond to repeated requests for comment, saying they wanted to protect the privacy of the patron. However, an unidentified staff member texted The Tribune:

"Of course the reaction was ecstatic. … Unfortunately, it has wreaked havoc with some employees."
