Hiker who died at Brimhall Double Bridge Trail identified

Garfield County officials have identified Dorothy Gillespie as the 56-year-old woman who died while hiking in Capitol Reef National Park on Thursday.

It was suspected Gillespie, of Orem, suffered heat exhaustion as temperatures neared 100 degrees along the popular Brimhall Double Bridge Trail. A statement Friday said her body had been turned over to the Utah Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

When the woman became ill, her husband reportedly hiked out to get help, but when emergency personnel arrived she had passed away.

The Garfield County Sheriffs' Office emphasizes that people need to be aware of the deadly risk of desert heat and make sure they remain well-hydrated during outings.
