With new dog-kennel construction underway, the Humane Society of Utah facility in Murray finds itself overrun with numerous small, lovable dogs. Accordingly, in the midst of a hot Utah August, it's having a "Hot Chihuahua Sale."

According to an HSU statement, anyone adopting a Chihuahua through the end of the month will receive $20 off the regular adoption fee ($150 for puppies 6 months or younger and $75 for dogs 7 months and older) along with a free microchip certificate.

The little-dog surplus grew from HSU's transfer program that rescued thousands of Chihuahuas from public shelters in the Los Angeles area.

"Many of these wonderful dogs were destined to be euthanized, and some were saved just moments before being put to sleep," the statement said.

Now these abundant, tiny tail-waggers are eager to find good homes and HSU is culminating the Hot Chihuahua Sale on Aug. 31 with an event called "The Whole Enchihuahua" Doggy Date Night.

Mexican food trucks arrive at 5 p.m., followed by Miss Utah International Laura Swanson signing autographs at 7 p.m. Swanson's platform is "Giving Animals a Second Chance." At 8 p.m., the Red Carpet Chihuahua Fashion Show rolls out, featuring adoptable dogs decked out in duds. The evening ends with an outdoor movie, "Beverly Hills Chihuahua," that starts at 8:30 p.m.

People are invited to bring their sociable canine friends to the event. Leashes are required.

The Humane Society of Utah, at 4242 S. 300 West in Murray, offers adoption hours from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays. For more information, call 801-261-2919.
