A police standoff in Poplar Grove ended Tuesday evening with the surrender of a man who allegedly waved and pointed a gun a customers in a gas station.

People at the Maverik station at 400 South and Redwood Road reported the man was brandishing a handgun Tuesday afternoon before he got into a car and drove east, said Salt Lake City police Sgt. Robin Snyder.

An officer found the vehicle and saw the man waving and pointing his gun while driving, Snyder said. The officer followed the man until he pulled up to a house at 319 S. Bothwell St. (1065 West) and went inside. Two women and four children left the house and told police the man was alone inside, Snyder said.

SWAT negotiators spoke on the telephone intermittently for about an hour and a half, trying to persuade him to come outside, Snyder said. About 8 p.m., officers sprayed a "low-level" pepper spray agent into the home, prompting the man to come outside, Snyder said.

He was arrested without incident.
