Ogden firefighters are investigating four suspicious fires near a landfill and a popular parkway Sunday evening.

The evening started with three grass fires on either side of 21st Street, near 600 West, and one by the nearby landfill, according to the Ogden Fire Department Twitter feed.

The fires only scorched less than half an acre in all by the time crews extinguished them. But while firefighters from Ogden and Weber Fire District were mopping up, a fourth small grass fire started at 530 E. River Dr. (about 1800 South).

Fire crews put it out quickly. No one was hurt and no structures were damaged in any of the fires, said Ogden Fire Battalion Chief Corey Barton.

The fires raise red flags for investigators, who are treating them as related and suspicious.

"There’s nothing there to start a fire," Barton said.

Investigators are not sure yet what sparked the small blazes, but the grass is so dry that someone would not even have needed an accelerant, Barton added. "The grass is already like gasoline."
