One person was killed and another critically injured in a two-car crash Friday morning on or near the Interstate 15 exit into downtown Salt Lake City.

Salt Lake City police Det. Veronica Montoya said the accident occurred at 5:21 a.m. on 600 South near West Temple when a pickup truck and a sedan collided. The man driving the sedan was dead at the scene, while a male passenger was critically injured.

The pickup truck's driver sustained minor injuries and refused transport to the hospital.

Montoya said further details — including the names and ages of the victims, and whether the sedan or pickup may have run a red light — were not immediately available.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area of the freeway from the 600 South to 900 South exits, instead taking the 600 North or 1300 South I-15 exits.

It took more than six hours for the wreckage to be cleared and investigation completed, allowing traffic flow to resume through the area.
