When you read The Salt Lake Tribune, one thing should be abundantly clear. This is Utah's newspaper, the state's best, most comprehensive source of news that affects, informs and interests Utahns.
We emphasize local and state news above all else, including when it comes to entertainment, sports and recreation. That fact is well demonstrated in the 13-part "Utah Bucket List" series that concludes in today's print edition with the B1 story about Utah's brilliant fall foliage. The complete series, including video and spectacular photo galleries, is available online.
Tribune outdoor writer Brett Prettyman, photographer Francisco Kjolseth and other staffers collaborated with KUED Channel 7 on the project, which also resulted in an hour-long television production KUED debuted Aug. 1 and will rebroadcast Sunday at 4 p.m.
"Utah Bucket List" took Tribune staffers, working with producer Nancy Green and a KUED crew, fly fishing on the Green River, rounding up bison on Antelope Island and tip-toeing through wildflowers at Albion Basin.
You wouldn't be alone in remarking that this assignment doesn't much sound like work, but what resulted is a series that surpassed our goal: to help you understand, appreciate and, most importantly, enjoy the natural marvel that is Utah. "Utah Bucket List" celebrates the unique attractions and characteristics that draw visitors from around the globe — and keep many of us here for a lifetime.
"We came up with the idea to have some fun in Utah and show it off and let people realize the opportunities that are out there for everybody, " Prettyman said in a TribTalk video chat about "Utah Bucket List."
Too often, those of us who call Utah home "get caught up in our daily lives and we forget this gorgeous state we live in and forget to spend time outdoors with family and friends," Green added in the segment. "This is about reconnecting not just to the landscape around us or the wildlife around us but really having common experiences in the great outdoors."
In planning the project The Tribune and KUED narrowed the options from a list of more than 100 possibilities Prettyman compiled.
Inclusiveness was an important consideration, Prettyman said. The series spells out opportunities for everyone, regardless of how risk averse you are.
If bouncing along the Colorado River through the notorious whitewater rapids of Cataract Canyon isn't your style, sailing on the Great Salt Lake might be, or you might enjoy camping at Devil's Garden in Arches National Park.
