A 38-year-old man was in extremely critical condition Thursday night after he suddenly veered across the road and crashed into a tree in Murray.
Dispatchers were fielding complaints Thursday evening about a reckless driver, who police believe was the same man, driving slowly, hitting the curb and suddenly accelerating on westbound 4500 South, said Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal.
About 7:23 p.m., minutes after those calls came in, the driver of a grey Chevy Impala suddenly veered across all of the westbound lanes, went over a low concrete median and then crossed all the eastbound lanes before crashing into a tree on the south side of the road, near 300 East, Hoyal said.
The front end of the Impala was significantly damaged and the man, who was alone in the sedan. He had to be extricated by Unified Fire Authority before he was taken Intermountain Medical Center.
Investigators are looking into whether he was suffering from a medical condition at the time, Hoyal said. There is no evidence that the man was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, Hoyal added.
