A 16-year-old was in custody Sunday after an alleged effort to rob two drug dealers in Sandy ended with one of the dealers getting shot in the hip.

Sandy police Sgt. Jon Arnold said early Sunday the teen set up a deal to purchase some marijuana in the parking lot of a business near 10000 South and 1300 East.

About 12:45 a.m., the teen and a friend met two males allegedly dealing the drugs, who climbed into the back seat of the teen’s Jeep Grand Cherokee.

But during the transaction, two other males approached the vehicle, opened the back doors, pulled the two alleged dealers out of the vehicle and physically assaulted them.

During the fight, one of the assailants shot one of the dealers in the hip, police said. The assailants fled on foot with the drugs.

Police said it appeared the juvenile who instigated the drug deal was working with the two attackers. The teen was located about 4 a.m. driving around Sandy and arrested. Arnold said officers recovered most, if not all, of the marijuana that had allegedly been stolen from the two dealers.

Arnold said police were not disclosing how much marijuana was stolen but said it was more than just a simple user-quantity.

The man who was shot in the hip was transported to a hospital where he was listed in fair condition Sunday.

The second alleged dealer was transported to a second hospital to be treated for cuts and abrasions.

Police continued to search for the other individual who accompanied the teen to the drug deal and the two assailants. They were also still investigating whether the two alleged dealers would face any charges.
