Salt Lake City police on Tuesday identified the two people who died Monday afternoon of gunshot wounds.
Killed were Calvin Eatchel, 51, and Debra Eatchel, 53, according to police.
"The initial investigation indicates this was a case of murder-suicide," said Det. Cody Lougy.
Lougy did not immediately release any details on what may have led to the shootings.
Neighbor Scott Nielsen said he was asleep about 1 p.m. inside his home on the 1600 West block of Eisenhower Way (about 225 South) when was awakened by a "boom, boom, boom, boom, boom" followed by a lot of sirens.
"It didn't sound like firecrackers," he said.
Abraham Gaucin, 12, who lives next door to Nielsen, said he heard about four to six shots ring out.
Police said they arrived to find a man dead in the street on Eisenhower Way and a woman dead inside a car that was half on a driveway and half on a nearby lawn.
Wall said police on Monday were trying to determine what had occurred.
Cottonwood Heights police Sgt. Mark Askerlund said one of the victims was closely related to a Cottonwood Heights officer. Askerlund said the two deceased had reportedly been married at one time.
Felipe Gaucin, who is Abraham's father, said the homeowner had only lived in one of the neatly-kept homes for a few months.
Neighbors said the community, which has a number of newly constructed houses, is usually free of crime.
"This is kind of shocking that something like this would happen [here]," Nielsen said.
